Benefits Of Singing

Benefits Of Singing

By now, people see the way COVID-19 not only affected the world but also affected our minds. Isolation has changed people, brought more stress than we thought possible, all due to being by ourselves, alone, with our thoughts. This change has brought a massive increase in mental illnesses and people attending therapy, searching for a way outside of their heads and a way to deal with their problems. Everyone needs a release, a way to feel better, and although less commonly thought of, music has been proven to change people's moods and help people through moments and times of stress. Music is constantly being explored, improving the way we think about medicine, mental health, and overall mood. Whether you realize it or not, everyone uses music in some way, shape, or form in their lives, and it largely affects us.

Maybe you listen to it in the car, bopping your head along to the beat, dancing to it at a party, or you sing along at the top of your lungs to your favorite songs in the shower, these are all feel-good moments that contribute to the release of endorphins and change your mood. Music has been proven to make people more energetic, less anxious, calmer, and overall happier. To get scientific, singing and playing musical instruments releases the hormone oxytone, which reduces stress. Music can affect brain waves, heart rate, state of mind, and more. Listening or making different music stimulates brain waves depending on fast or slow tempo can change the way it stimulates your brain. Faster music can make you more energetic, while a slower tempo can make people calmer. Music affects your heart rate, changes it, slows it down, reduces stress, and activates a relaxation response. The state of your mind can vary due to music too, changing into a more positive mindset which helps people's overall mental health whether you are depressed, happy, sad, anxious, or calm.

Music, especially singing, is something that everyone can do. Although singing can be personal, it is something that helps people connect, join together, and make memories, as well as its therapeutic benefits. We all go through different experiences, but they can be similar in one way or another. The music captures these moments and feelings of one person's unique experience and makes it universally relatable. Artists write music explaining a feeling, thought, or wish that many people can relate to. There are billions of songs in the world, billions of different emotions and experiences expressed within them, and each of these billions of songs can be interpreted in millions of ways. This is another reason why music can be a therapy, because sometimes talking is too hard, and instead, we want to feel, listen, and express without having to analyze with a therapist or spending the money for a therapist. So music can be either an escape or a way to connect and understand. This makes it powerful because music has so many possibilities in which some we haven't even explored. So sing. Listen to music. Play an instrument. Experiment and have fun because music is the easiest therapy.
